Join the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, legendary conductor Guy Barker and virtuoso pianist Anoesjcka DeLorenzo for a sweeping Summer Lunchtime celebrating female composers.
DeLorenzo composes pictorial, emotive music reflecting the human condition; each piece is an internal journey with endless possibilities. Because DeLorenzo composes “by feeling, not rule,” her music leads with empathy and melodrama in equal measures, conjuring a social togetherness in the viewing experience. Cinematic, flowing pieces in this expansive lunchtime concert include Astral Sky and Parte Di Me.
The programme also shines a light on trailblazing women composers from the 20th century, such as Shirley Walker (1945–2006), one of the first female composers to earn a solo score credit on a major Hollywood motion picture, known for her Batman, Superman: The Animated Series and Final Destination scores. Also featured are works by Bernice Petkere (1901–2000), hailed by Irving Berlin as the “Queen of Tin Pan Alley”, and Lil Hardin Armstrong (1898–1971), jazz pianist, composer, arranger, singer and bandleader, known for Bad Boy, a hit for the Jive Bombers in 1957 and Just for a Thrill, revived by Ray Charles in 1959.
As DeLorenzo puts it, “The perception of our own experiences is often unreliable. Our art tells the truth.” Discover this musical subconscious through the female gaze in this special lunchtime concert of women composers. Presented by the RTÉ Concert Orchestra.
