First Conviction album out now

8-track original music score performed by the RTÉ Concert Orchestra

Tony-nominated, multi-award-winning composer Mel Mercier’s soundtrack for the RTÉ Documentary on One podcast and TV documentary, First Conviction is out now.

The 8-track original music score is performed by RTÉ Concert Orchestra, with Grammy-nominated, Congolese-born guitarist Niwel Tsumbu, traditional flute player Karl Nesbitt, jazz pianist Paul O’Donnell, Catalan singer Clara Sanabras and Mercier himself on percussion, drones and electronics. String arrangements are by Áine Delaney.

Hosted by Academy Award-nominated Irish actress Ruth Negga and produced by the international award-winning RTÉ Doc on One and RTÉ Investigates teams, the 6-part First Conviction radio podcast and TV documentary explored the case of a couple imprisoned for a crime that never happened, and the ongoing and far-reaching consequences for the Irish system.

On the remixed and mastered First Conviction album, the fusion of orchestral strings, African guitar grooves, jazz piano, voice, traditional flute and percussion in Mercier’s dynamic soundtrack reverberates with the flow and emotions of this groundbreaking documentary.

“From the very first note”, writes Liam O’Brien, Series Producer of RTÉ Doc on One, “Mel exquisitely captures the tension and trauma within this really important story of modern Ireland. Bridging the musical landscapes of Africa and Ireland, Mel’s brilliant and deeply evocative soundtrack infuses the series with rhythm, texture and character.

Published by RTÉ, the First Conviction album is available now on Bandcamp, Apple Music, Soundcloud, Spotify and all major online digital music publishing platforms.
